The Fostering Network’s annual awareness raising campaign, Foster Care Fortnight, began on Monday 11 May 2020 and will run for two weeks.
Every day foster carers give children safe, loving and supportive homes – and this is especially true under incredibly difficult circumstances throughout the current coronavirus crisis.
The theme for this year’s campaign is ‘This Is Fostering’ which the Network hopes will convey a varied and authentic picture of the contributions of the people involved in fostering, from those caring for children every day to those championing children at a national level.
As the campaign enters its second week, Iain Gray MSP has underlined his support for foster carers in East Lothian and across Scotland with an open letter thanking them for their efforts and urging anyone considering becoming a foster carer to come forward now:
An open letter to East Lothian’s foster carers for Foster Care Fortnight
As we celebrate Foster Care FortnightTM 2020 I want to take this opportunity to recognise the amazing foster families in East Lothian. Year-round, foster carers, and their families, make a huge difference to the lives of the children and young people they love and care for.
Fostering is hugely rewarding, but it can also be immensely challenging, and never more so than during this crisis. I want to say thank you to all the foster carers who are making sure that children have a safe and loving home and reassurance at this unprecedented time. The work you are doing, caring for children, giving them stability and showing them love is more important than ever as they experience disruption to their schooling and the contact they might normally have with their birth families and siblings.
I want every child and young person in foster care in East Lothian to be able to have a loving, stable and happy childhood. There is work to be done to make sure this happens, and recognising and supporting our foster families is at the heart of that.
As your local MSP I will always champion foster care and help to raise awareness of the vital work of foster families in East Lothian.
Foster Care Fortnight is the UK’s biggest foster care awareness raising campaign, delivered by leading fostering charity, The Fostering Network. As well as recognition for our dedicated foster carers, the charity is calling for more people to come forward to foster. We need to recruit many more foster carers to offer children homes, so if you think you could foster, visit thefosteringnetwork.org.uk/could-you-foster
